During qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix Max Verstappen had to finish behind Mercedes again. Still the Dutchman hopes he can put pressure on Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas during the race.

No matter what Max Verstappen does in his RB16, it is almost impossible for the Dutchman to compete with Mercedes in qualifying on Saturday. This was again the case on the circuit of Barcelona, where the Dutchman, well behind the black arrows, was allowed to take the third starting position for his name.

"It looks like I have a subscription to P3, I think I've been third all weekend. Qualifying was good, of course I tried to get as close as possible. I think we got the most out of the car. Of course there are still areas where we can do better work, but the car is definitely getting better, that's good," the Dutchman explained at the press conference after the race.

New day, new opportunities

Although Mercedes is dominant on Saturday, the team can sometimes be vulnerable during the race, as was well exhibited at the Silverstone circuit. Verstappen hopes that he can fight again with the cars of Mercedes on Sunday. "Tomorrow is another day and we have to show it again. Of course hope that I can get close and put the pressure on them".

For the Dutchman, the qualification was not entirely flawless either. During Q1 Verstappen came on the radio with a strange message. "I went through turn two and I could see the left front wheel coming up - that's very strange. Fortunately it didn't happen again after that. They checked everything and everything was fine, so I honestly don't know what felt so weird. It was also pretty windy on the track. A bit weird, but luckily the problem didn't come back", the driver of Red Bull Racing concluded.
