Hamilton dissatisfied: "Only the drivers put pressure on Pirelli"
- GPblog.com
The Pirelli tyres of 2020 seem to be anything but working for the teams and the drivers. The high level of wear and tear on the tyres means that drivers have no choice but to drive calmly throughout the race in order to save the tyres. According to many, this has to change and Lewis Hamilton wants to put more pressure on the Italian tyre supplier.
"Drivers are constantly complaining about the overheated tyres," Hamilton explained to Autosport. "When there used to be a fight between two tyre suppliers, we had lighter cars. However, it was a duel, because two suppliers were constantly putting pressure on each other to get better and at the moment there is no one putting pressure on Pirelli except the drivers themselves."
Together with Pirelli to find a solution
Hamilton has indicated that there is no point in going against Pirelli and that it is more effective to find a solution together. "We have to be careful because we do not want to argue with Pirelli. We have to be constructive and just talk."
"If you look at last year's letter, in which the purpose is set out around the tyres, that really wasn't good. There was no input from the drivers and the target was different from what we have been asking for for years. I myself would like races with multiple stops, the one-stop races are not great. If you look at the hypersoft in 2018, that was the best tyre if you look at grip, we want that grip for a few laps longer."
