Wolff: 'Unreal requests are being made to Pirelli'.
- Jeroen Rooseboom de Vries
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes that impossible requests are being made regarding the tyres for 2022. Lewis Hamilton was asking loudly for tyres that could push the whole race, but according to the Italians and his team boss at Mercedes Toto Wolff that is unrealistic.
It is, in fact, a common complaint from drivers and fans. The races are said to be too boring, because the tyres have to be spared too much. But Pirelli cannot fulfil that wish, says Wolff to Motorsport.com. “The task of Pirelli is not simple because the technicians have to make products while we develop F1 single-seaters that increase the aerodynamic load every year."
But Wolff also thinks it's a good idea to ensure that saving tyres becomes less important in the race. “It would be very nice if they could give us tires with which everyone would be happy to run, but we know that it is not realistic to think of it because of a physical impossibility. A tyre that has a lot of grip and lasts for fifty percent of the race would be great for the riders, but they are not sure that it would guarantee a great show."
For the time being it remains to be seen whether Pirelli will be able to grant the wishes of the drivers and fans.
