Hamilton leads Mercedes one-two in FP2 at Monza
Lewis Hamilton asserted Mercedes' dominance as he secured a comfortable top spot in FP2 of the Italian Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas made it a Mercedes one-two with a late Lando Norris lap putting him third.
Despite being one of the last drivers to set a time in the session, the Brit never really looked like relinquishing top spot for very long. His best time of 1:20.192 was enough to top the session ahead of his teammate Bottas who set a best of 1:20.454. Mercedes have won all but one race this season and it doesn't look as if anyone can catch their superior power this weekend.
Lando Norris put in a late lap on the soft tyres to put him third just behind the Mercedes pair, giving McLaren cause for optimism this weekend.
Pierre Gasly was the surprise package in FP2 as he managed to secure P4 in the session ahead of his former-teammate and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. However, there was a slight concern for him late in the session as he had to slowly drive back to the pits before the end of the session.
Ferrari were once again well off the pace, as Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel finished P9 and P12 respectively. Carlos Sainz (P6), Danil Kvyat (P7), Lance Stroll (P9) and Sergio Perez (P10) completed the top ten.
Claire Wiliams' final FP2 ended in slightly underwhelming fashion as they finished 19th and 20th, with George Russell complaining about the balance of the car late in the session.
The day belongs to Mercedes however, as they look to continue their supreme form around the Temple of Speed.
