Sainz is upset: "I had the feeling that we could dominate the midfield today"
Carlos Sainz achieved a surprising second place for the Italian Grand Prix. The Spaniard was very close to race winner Pierre Gasly but was unable to catch up with the Frenchman in the end. The McLaren driver had to settle for second place and will be feeling a bit disappointed despite it being his best-ever F1 race finish.
"I think we should be happy with second place. I really can't believe we were fighting for victory. With a normal race I would have been happy with second place, when Lewis just drives in front of us. I did wonder how Pierre managed to get in front of us. I think we had some bad luck with the safety car, but I think we were able to fix it with the red flag," Sainz explained after the race.
"We were really fast and I felt we could dominate the midfield. We should be proud of the fact that we went from sixth to second at the start and then Pierre was on his heels and ended up finishing within a second. Without the red flag we would have been caught behind Lewis, but it's what it is," Sainz said.
