Has the time come for Adrian Newey? 'Too long the same men in place'
- GPblog.com
The Italian Grand Prix was one to be quickly forgotten for Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen. The problems persist and the question is whether this can go on any longer? Does anything need to change internally to improve performance?
Christian Horner was so happy as a child at the end of 2007 when he was able to detach top designer Adrian Newey from McLaren. Together with Newey, Horner brought Red Bull to the top and won four world titles. Now the team has been dry for years and is no longer able to meet the high expectations. Does anything have to change within the team?
Does Newey have to leave Red Bull?
''I think this is a bit the Barcelona effect (football club). For too long the same men have been sitting in the same spot and despite poorer results they are still sitting there. I think the best part is with Adrian Newey. You can see at McLaren what a number of new people can do. Expectations are so high at Red Bull every year, but there are more and more teams on Red Bull's neck,'' says team boss Frans Verschuur at F1 aan Tafel.
Other table guest, Jeroen Bleekemolen, agrees. ''You see that there are a lot of fresh people at other teams, where Newey is getting a day older and needs youth around him. He is still at his top. You just have to combine that'', concludes Bleekemolen.
