Possible debut of Schumacher makes television station hesitate

RTL Germany has been broadcasting the Formula 1 races on television since 1991, but that will end after this year. Formula 1 will also come to our eastern neighbours behind the pay wall at Sky.
Although the decision was only taken last summer, the doubts in Germany have now reached the point where it is likely that Mick Schumacher will be seen in Formula 1 from next year. Michael Schumacher's son may be driving for Alfa Romeo. RTL has broadcasted his famous father's entire career on TV with sometimes more than twelve million people watching.
With the arrival of Schumacher in Formula 1 and Vettel at Aston Martin, this could mean another boost for the number of viewers in Germany. Today, up to four million people watch a Formula 1 race. Former driver Timo Glock reacts at Speedweek: "It could be a pity for the timing with Mick and Sebastian. It could give Formula 1 a new impulse in Germany".
Money plays a role
Andres von Thien of RTL says that the popularity has not only played a role in leaving Formula 1 "After almost 30 years, it really wasn't an easy decision for us, because this sport was and is a great passion for us". However, several factors played a role, including money. It seems that Sky paid more than four times as much for the rights than RTL did. The rights will be released in 2023. Is RTL going to interfere? "Never say never", concludes Thien.
