Honda's departure is not understood: ''I can't make anything positive out of this"
Red Bull Racing has to find a new engine supplier before 2022 due to the departure of Honda from F1. Where there are still some possibilities, Martin Brundle doesn't know how to give it a positive spin.
Last week Honda announced that it would stop their Formula 1 project at the end of 2021. The Japanese want to make the switch because of sustainability and F1 doesn't fit in that picture anymore. Martin Brundle, former Formula 1 driver and current Sky Sports analyst, can hardly understand this.
Three plans for Red Bull
"I just can't make anything positive out of this. I'm assuming that Plan A from Red Bull is to take over the bike and give it a new brand name. Plan B should be a return to Renault and Plan C may be an exit," he said listing all the options for Red Bull. However, from Red Bull's answers, Plan C doesn't seem to be a realistic option.
However, taking over Honda is a scenario that is becoming more and more apparent. Red Bull would then take over the Formula 1 project from Honda itself, so that the knowledge would not be lost and Honda would not have done all the work for nothing. The question then is whether Red Bull itself wants and can invest the money to further develop the engine.
