With Formula 1 returning to the Imola circuit for the first time since 2006, the Grand Prix weekend in 1994 is remembered. Two drivers lost their lives, including the legendary Ayrton Senna. Pierre Gasly comes with a special tribute to the driver.

The GP weekend in 1994

It was a weekend that everyone wanted to forget as soon as possible. During qualifying on Saturday, Roland Ratzenberger lost control of the wheel in the Villeneuva Curva, after which he crashed into the wall at high speed. Upon arrival in the hospital, he appeared to have died of his injuries.

During the race on Sunday it was Ayrton Senna, still considered by many to be the best Formula 1 driver of all time, who crashed. In the Tamburello turn, he drove straight due to damage, after which he also ended up in the concrete wall at great speed.

Two hours and twenty minutes after the race, which continued, he was declared dead. An Austrian flag was found in his cockpit, which he wanted to wave at the end of the race to honour Roland Ratzenberger.

Tribute Pierre Gasly

The events are not forgotten. Especially now that Imola is being raced again for the first time in a long time, a lot of thought is being given to it. For this reason, Pierre Gasly will be driving with a special helmet this weekend, as a tribute to his youth hero.
