Albon reflects on controversial Istanbul surface
- GPblog.com
Alexander Albon put in a solid shift on day one in Turkey, finishing P2 and P5 in the opening two sessions. The surface at Istanbul Park has caused quite the stir and the Red Bull driver has been giving his thoughts.
Albon was the second fastest behind Max Verstappen in the first free practice and led for large parts of FP2, eventually finishing in fifth. The Red Bull driver was still satisfied with his work on Friday.
"It was a positive day and it's always fun to try out a new track", he said in the Red Bull Racing retrospective. "In FP1 and FP2 it was like an ice rink and a bit weird because it's not a normal feeling to drive like a drift car. You just glide around, which is fun of course, but it's not what an F1 car likes."
"In order to switch the tires on and get them to work you're having to push way out of your comfort zone. The soft tires didn't help as much as we thought, so I don't know what the teams are going to do in qualifying. It feels like we all have to put the soft tires on, fill up the car and just keep driving!"
