In 2022, Formula 1 teams will have to come up with a completely new design due to the completely new technical regulations. According to James Key, this is a unique opportunity for all teams to take the next step.
Engineers in Formula 1 are always busy developing the car and are always looking forward to the next season. On the other hand, they have to perform this year as well, so the performance of the current car cannot lag behind either. According to James Key, this balance in 2021 will be essential for performance from 2022 onwards.
Key enjoys the new opportunity
"It is very difficult with such a big change. We have already seen that in 2009, 2017 and 2014. As an engineer, you want to work on the new car, but you also have to perform in the current season. The difference with the previous changes to the regulations is that at that time you could still build on old foundations. Now we're going to ground effect cars and there's no reference point at all for the teams," said McLaren's technical elite to Auto, Motor und Sport.
Although it is very difficult for engineers, Key is enjoying this opportunity. "I'm a fan of this kind of change because it's a good time to take a step back and think freely again. Now you have to think which way you want to go without foreknowledge, without being able to see what the others are doing."
