Max Verstappen, Honda and Red Bull Racing had set their sights on the 2020 championship. The goal was to make the Dutchman the youngest world champion ever, but they had to acknowledge their superior in Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. The youngest world champion will no longer be able to be Verstappen, as he will be too old for that record next year, but that does not detract from his motivation.

No worries

This is what Helmut Marko says when asked by Oe24.at. "You don't have to worry about that. Max has enough motivation. And we will do everything to provide him with a car with which he can become world champion in 2021. That remains the big goal."

An important factor in this, of course, is a reliable car and at the very least finish, let alone take victories.

The team had several opportunities to do this, but unforeseen circumstances threw a spanner in the works. In addition, Marko argues that the happiness that Mercedes constantly has will one day return to Red Bull Racing. "Especially recently in Turkey we have shown that we are capable of victory, but we must not give away the victories so lightly.

"Max Verstappen could also win in Mugello or Imola," Marko adds. Locations where the team missed out on valuable points and which allowed Hamilton to take an ever-greater lead in the championship. Finally, Marko says: "I sometimes ask myself about Mecedes: Why does everything work for them? At some point, luck should also come back to us."
