Earlier it was already known that Fernando Alonso would get permission from the FIA to participate in the test days in Abu Dhabi. Normally this possibility is intended for rookies, but in this case an exception is made.
Test Days in Abu Dhabi
The Renault team, for which Alonso will be competing in 2021, now confirms that he will indeed be in action during the test days. Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou will also participate in the test days. What is special is that this is called the "young driver test", in which Alonso will participate at the age of 39.
Because of the coronavirus crisis, some teams wanted to save on the costs of these test days, after which they finally agreed to give rookies the chance to test in a Formula 1 car. The modified rules therefore state that participants in this test must not have driven more than two Formula 1 races.
An exception has been made for Alonso. However, he has been absent from Formula 1 for several years, so he will be happy with this possibility.
