Perez overjoyed with victory: "I hope I'm not dreaming"
In perhaps the craziest race of the season, and that says a lot in 2020, Sergio Perez unexpectedly takes his first victory in his Formula 1 career. In the first lap, he was tapped by Charles Leclerc and the Mexican was last. After catching up throughout the race, he was able to take full advantage of the Mercedes breakdown in the pits.
"I am a little speechless. I hope I am not dreaming. I have dreamt for some many years for this moment. It took me 10 years. After the lap the race was already gone, and it was just keeping going and never giving up," Perez said after the race.
Perez is still hoping for Red Bull Racing
"We won on merit although we know Mercedes had issues and George drove well today. I made a mistake on the safety car restart I locked up the front left massively but I recovered on the second stint. On my long run on Friday we knew what we had to do," he added.
Perez still doesn't have a drive for next year, but is in the hunt for seat at Red Bull. "Just gives me a bit more peace with myself. What happens is not in my hands. If I am not on there grid next year I will in 2022."
