Russell hopes to give Wolff and Mercedes a headache: 'Maybe before 2022'
George Russell has been stuck at the back of the grid with Williams. It's been difficult to analyse his full performance as a driver due to the weakness of the Williams car. After a weekend where he replaced Lewis Hamilton, he's confident he has done a strong job in the Williams and hopes to give Toto Wolff a selection headache.
“I guess there’s always an element of uncertainty in the back of your mind. From a personal perspective, this has been a great weekend of validation, saying ‘actually we probably have been doing a very good job in the Williams this year’," Russell told The Race and other media sources.
Wolff has to manage it
The young Brit hopes that he has made Wolff doubt himself. “And secondly, I guess yeah from Toto’s perspective, hopefully, I have given him a headache. Not just for 2022, maybe sooner," says Russell. However, he does understand that it would be illogical to tear up Bottas' contract for 2021.
“The way to do your talking is on track. This is a performance industry and I hope this weekend has cemented their views regarding me. Mercedes have supported me since the end of 2016, they have followed my whole career very closely. Hopefully, this is just another step on the ladder," he concluded.
