Sergio Perez's place on the Formula 1 grid is up in the air with a switch to Red Bull his only real option. His former teammate Esteban Ocon cannot believe the Mexican could miss out next season.

He belongs in Formula 1

Esteban Ocon is of course very familiar with Sergio Perez, as they were teammates at the former Force India. Speaking to Formula1.com, Ocon said: "It’s obviously a very tough position to be in. I know well, know how it feels like. I’m glad that Sergio is obviously getting the result, you know? To show everybody that he deserves to be in Formula 1."

"He’s one of the top guys out there and he can’t be left outside. There’s no… it would not be normal." But it's not in the hands of Ocon and with many teams full for 2021, Perez's chances are rapidly diminishing. The only realistic option would be Red Bull Racing, but they're still holding on to Alexander Albon at the moment.

That's how the sport is

"But sometimes the sport is like that, unfortunately,” he continued, “and you don’t end up in the best situations."

Ocon himself watched Mercedes for a year and that helped him a lot. Finally, he said: "On my side obviously it’s been a tough year but I was in good hands. I had a lot of people believing in me and supporting me, which has helped me to come back after a year out – and yeah, here we are. Not easy to get going but after a bit of running, you get there."
