It is almost 2021, and for Honda that means they are starting their final year as an official engine supplier in Formula 1. What the future of their power source will look like after that is still uncertain. Toyoharu Tanabe, the man in charge of Honda's Formula 1 programme, says he wants to finish on a high.

Honda started working with Red Bull in 2018 and their engine was in the back of Max Verstappen's car from 2019, they had one goal in mind: to become world champion. Since the engine regulations will remain unchanged for many years to come, they thought they had enough time for this, but at the head office in Japan they decided otherwise.

New engine better in all respects?

They want to spend more money on making their car fleets more sustainable, so 2021 is the last year in Formula 1 for Honda. Tanabe therefore promises that it will do everything in its power for that last chance to achieve their goal. That is why it will introduce a new engine one more time.

According to Motorsport-Total.com, Tanabe explains in the press conference for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that they have not concentrated on one area for the new engine. They have tried to improve the power source in all respects and eventually merge it into a new package.
