"That's probably why Red Bull still has doubts about Perez"
- GPblog.com
Red Bull Racing has still not officially decided on their choice of driver for 2021. Sergio Perez qualifies for the second seat and the Mexican couldn't offer a better calling card than his victory in Bahrain.
Whether he made the choice for Red Bull easier is debatable. Alexander Albon didn't make the best impression during that same race, did Perez show enough to earn a spot on the top team? Ho-Pin Tung understands why there are still doubts.
Is Perez fast enough on Saturday?
In his opinion, Red Bull especially needs a second driver who can support Verstappen from a strategic point of view. If the second driver is close to the Dutchman, the team can then try two different strategies in order to put further pressure on Mercedes. However, that second driver also needs to qualify well.
"Perez does not always excel in qualifying and perhaps this is a reason why Red Bull still has doubts, as it is crucial to start at the front for tactical advantage. But if it's really about Sunday, he will be there. And that's exactly what Red Bull could use," said Tung to Nu.nl.
