Red Bull gives an update on engines from 2022: "Close to coming to a conclusion"
- GPblog.com
Red Bull Racing initially wanted to have clarity in mid-November about the engine with which they will start in Formula 1 in 2022. This deadline was then postponed to early December and late to mid-December. However, there is still no clarity.
In the press moment from Red Bull after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Christian Horner indicated that there were still plenty of talks with all the parties involved. It remains unclear, however, when the Austrian race team will be able to provide more openness.
Talks with Honda and the FIA
"We've got constructive discussions going on with Honda and the FIA. We are close to coming to a conclusion. Obviously the FIA are consulting the other teams" says Horner. Reportedly Mercedes would like to see a freeze on the regulations, while Ferrari and Renault would like to participate only under strict conditions.
Indeed, the two engine manufacturers are concerned that a freeze will leave Mercedes with its current lead in the years to come because there will be very little scope for development. However, an engine freeze is essential for Red Bull, because they themselves do not have the means to develop the power unit from 2022 onwards.
Nothing definitive yet about Red Bull's plan
According to Horner, it is important to have the whole picture well worked out. The preconditions are very important. "It's just should there be a safety net if a manufacture undershoots from one season to the next. To lock in a performance for three years could be quite damaging."
But where does Red Bull stand now? "Obviously we're focused on Plan A. Honda are being accommodating so we're having a healthy discussion but nothing is finalised," said the team boss of the Milton Keynes based race formation.
