Windsor highly impressed by Verstappen: "The epitome of the art"
Peter Windsor was left very impressed by Max Verstappen at the Yas Marina Circuit. The renowned Formula 1 journalist tries to make it clear in his new video on YouTube how dominant the Red Bull Racing driver was on Sunday. According to Windsor, Verstappen's performance was the "epitome of the art".
"Red Bull were just in another class. So how to give Max Verstappen's win the true credit it deserves? It's very easy to write off races like this and say it wasn't exciting, it was pretty boring. Mercedes weren't there, they already won the championship and it was an easy day for Max. But of course, it's never easy and there's always more going on behind the scenes," said Windsor.
Max much faster than the competition
The Brit explains the reason main reason why he thinks Verstappen's performance was so good. "For me, there's one stat that really stands out from the Grand Prix. If you take the lap time of 1:41.5, which is a good lap time around the Yas Marina Circuit in race conditions. If you take that as a race winning consistent lap time, Max did 31 laps today at 41.5 and below. By comparison, Bottas only did 15 laps at 41.5 or below. Hamilton and Albon who finished 3rd and 4th, only 8 laps at that pace," he added.
"That gives you an idea of how fast Verstappen was. There were two occasions when Mercedes got on the radio and said to Bottas 'okay Valtteri now is the moment give it all you've got.' On both occasions, the next lap Verstappen was 0.3 quicker than Bottas. A very impressive performance."
Verstappen majestic
"If you look at the consistency of Verstappen during that race, it was almost incredible. It was predictable what the next lap time was going to be. Just Metronymic. You could say it was boring, going on, impossible to overtake. But that's not fair. Because this was the epitome of the art. This was dominating the race from the pole responding to anything that was coming at him," Windsor concluded.
