Christian Horner is excited by his team's chances in 2021. Red Bull Racing managed to close the gap to Mercedes reasonably over the season and the Austrian team hopes to build on the current momentum.

"We need a car that can handle different types of circuits, which has turned out to be one of Mercedes' strongest points in recent years," Horner said in an online press release from Red Bull after the Abu Grand Prix. Since the 2021 calendar has 23 Grands Prix, it is therefore even more important than ever.

Trust with Verstappen and co.

The Verstappen win provides a boost for the Milton Keynes-based formation. "That is why it is so encouraging that we can take our performance on this circuit into winter." Prior to Sunday's Grand Prix, Mercedes had won every race in the hybrid era at the Yas Marina Circuit

In recent seasons, Red Bull have lagged behind from the first weekend. Horner himself hopes that next year will be different. "In any case, we don't have to start from scratch again, we are taking an important part of this car with us. The car that we will be testing in Barcelona in a few months is very similar to the car we ended up with here, only then with a few upgrades, "says the Red Bull team boss.

Red Bull hopes to build on the momentum

Where Red Bull have continued to develop considerably in the last weeks of the 2020 season, Mercedes seems to have taken it a bit easier in terms of updates. Did Merceds turn their focus on 2021 very early on? "Our philosophy is: we take everything we learn this year with us to next year. Then we can also use it. Mercedes is very strong, although we have seen that they have also brought some new components. We believe that Mercedes will be rock solid again next year. But if we can build on this momentum, we may be able to make life a little more difficult for them. That's the goal."
