Switch Vettel to Aston Martin "a great story"
- GPblog.com
After six years, Sebastian Vettel leaves Ferrari to drive for Aston Martin in 2021. Vettel came to the Italians to give them a new world title, but his Italian adventure didn't work as planned.
Nothing more to prove
Vettel was runner-up at Ferrari twice in the championship, but for the past two years, he has not been able to compete with Charles Leclerc as a teammate. In 2020 he only managed to score 33 points with one podium finish. From 2021 he will race for Aston Martin. "As a four-time world champion, Vettel no longer has anything to prove to anyone anyway," says Gerhard Berger at Motorsport-Total.com.
It remains to be seen whether Vettel will ever have a chance of winning a fifth world title. "It won't be easy for Sebastian to really go for world championship there," Berger predicts for Vettel's first year with Aston Martin. "But I can see him perhaps fighting at the front in one or two races.”
Great story
Berger is in any case happy that the German is going to a new team. "For Sebastian, who still loves driving and loves being there, it's a great story." Compared to Ferrari in 2020, Aston Martin, which finished fourth in the championship, is also a step up the ladder.
However, according to Berger, Racing Point's performance - as Aston Martin was called last season - must be seen in perspective. "You have to say it's already a very strong Mercedes copy and that gave them a bit of an advantage, that could flatten out a bit again next year.”
