It may be clear that Ferrari had a bad season in 2020, but if you look back in the history of the team you can only see how bad this year really was. It has been 40 years since Ferrari performed so badly.

After a promising season in 2019, Ferrari was forced to face the facts in 2020. After tightening up the rules around the engine, in 2020 Ferrari suddenly came a lot slower and was overtaken by Red Bull Racing, McLaren, Racing Point and Renault. As a result, they finished sixth in the manufacturers' championship.

Particularly bad year for Ferrari

That is Ferrari's worst performance in 40 years. Ferrari finished so low for the last time in 1980, when it came tenth among the manufacturers. That was a disastrous year for the Italians, after winning the world title as a team in 1979 and still having top drivers with Jody Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve.

The tenth place is therefore a low point in Ferrari's history, but the sixth place can also be placed in that row. In addition to tenth place in 1980, sixth place in 1973, 1969 and 1962 were in fact the worst results. 2020 can now be added to that list of three, making it one of the worst records in history.
