Monaco denies rumours: Grand Prix to continue in 2021
- GPblog.com
Last week several reports surfaced that the Monaco Grand Prix this year would be cancelled, just like in 2020. The organisation of the F1-weekend now announces that these rumours are not true. From May 20 to 23, the race will be organised through the streets of Monaco as usual.
“Despite the latest rumors circulating on certain websites and social media, the Automobile Club de Monaco can confirm that the Monaco GP will take place from May 20th to 23rd, 2021,” said a short statement.
The ACM (the organisers) also confirm that the Grand Prix Monaco Historique (23-25 April 2021) and the Monaco E-Prix (8 May 2021) will take place.
Tactical game?
Despite the fact that Monaco now indicates it wants to host Formula 1, it is not certain that the weekend will actually take place. The promoters will lose a lot of money if they break the contract with Formula 1. If the weekend has to be cancelled, the question is which party wants to cancel. They will have to pay the costs. Possibly this statement of the ACM is such a tactic.
There is currently no lockdown in Monaco, although there is a curfew. This should be lifted at the end of January.
