Wolff: 'That is why Hamilton only signed for eleven months'

The long-awaited Hamilton-Mercedes deal has finally been signed. Lewis Hamilton has only signed for the coming season. Team boss Toto Wolff explains why.
Joint decision Mercedes and Hamilton
It is an unlikely deal for both parties; Lewis Hamilton signs on for just one year with Mercedes. For Mercedes, the Briton wins victories and titles, Hamilton himself can expand his status as an athlete with Mercedes and set a world record by overtaking Michael Schumacher. So why only a one-year extension?
In 2015 Hamilton signed a contract for another three years with Mercedes. In 2018 he extended it by two years and now only 2021 is fixed for the seven-time world champion. Wolff told Motorsport-magazin.com: "It was a decision from both sides."
Wolff gives two reasons
Wolff explains: "It has to do with two main reasons. Firstly, in 2022 we will have completely new regulations in F1. Secondly, the budget cap also plays a big role and is a reason why we are waiting to negotiate an additional season in 2022 and 2023.
"This year we do meet earlier and will discuss the future."
