American former police officer, Derek Chauvin, was found guilty of killing George Floyd by a jury on Tuesday. On his social channels, Lewis Hamilton demonstrated his relief after this news broke in America.

In May 2020, Floyd was killed when a police officer appeared to press his knee on the black American's neck for nearly nine minutes. After this incident, the Black Lives Matter movement protested around the world, for which Hamilton also spoke out clearly. The former policeman has yet to hear what sentence he will receive, but the crime he was found guilty of carries prison sentences of around 40 years.

Hamilton is relieved

"Justice for George! The emotions I feel right now are hard to describe. Derek Chauvin has been found guilty, and this is the first time a white police officer has been found guilty of killing a black man in Minnesota. This is monumental,'' Hamilton wrote on Instagram.

Yet Lewis also let it be known that there is still a long way to go. "This is just the first step on a path towards a more equal society. Since George's death, so many more black people have died at the hands of the police and we must ensure the momentum of today continues. The fight is not over, there is more to be done but we can consider today a glimmer of hope," added the seven-time Formula 1 world champion.
