Max Verstappen is very proud of his victory in Monaco. The Red Bull Racing driver was on the podium for the first time at that venue and he calls winning it 'very special'. Verstappen also says that he reassured the engineers of the Austrian racing team beforehand.

"We can't complain like that," Verstappen laughed in a conversation with Ziggo Sport. "At some point, I did see on the screens that Lewis was a bit behind. I've said it before: it's a very long season. Of course, this is the best after the last two races. Winning here in Monaco is very special."

Max on top in World Championship

Both Verstappen and Red Bull are now top of the World Championship, but he doesn't want to cheer too early. "We have to make sure we are competitive every weekend. Monaco can always give a bit of a distorted picture. When we go back to normal circuits Mercedes will be very strong again. We have to keep working," he stated.

Leclerc was unable to start and so the first place was immediately in Verstappen's hands. "That's luck and bad luck. He caused the red flag yesterday, otherwise, I would have been first anyway," said Verstappen, who didn't feel he was under pressure."I was able to manage the tyres and everyone who wanted to get a little bit closer was killing their tyres. That indicated we had a margin. I never felt under pressure though."

Verstappen reassures Red Bull

Verstappen's mechanics were very relieved afterwards with the second win of the year."They were a bit of a nervous before the race. I said: calm down, you know you're good. You know what to do with the pit stops and then it will be all right'."
