Szafnauer on Pirelli allegations: "We haven't done that"
- GPblog.com
Prior to the weekend in the south of France Pirelli came out with a statement about the burst tyres in Baku. A statement that created more discussion than it clarified. According to the tyre supplier, it was not Pirelli's fault but the teams. They would have pushed the limits of the tyre pressure, with the burst tyres for Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen as a result.
On the Paul Ricard circuit, the tyres didn't blow up. Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer says in conversation with MotorsportTotal.com that hopefully, this weekend has proven that his team, which was the victim of a blowout, is not to blame.
"We did long stints. I hope that silences the critics who say we did something unfair with the tyres. We haven't done that, we never have and we never will."
Aston Martin is familiar with the rules
According to Szafnauer, the team is indeed familiar with the regulations and has simply adapted to them. "We know exactly what to do and have proven it again. There is a new technical directive with higher tire pressures. We have adhered to that and still done a very good job with the tyres. Maybe you should look at some of our competitors who were more likely to drive backwards than us", said the Aston Martin team boss.
So Red Bull and Aston Martin continue to say that they are not guilty and that Pirelli's accusations are groundless. How this story continues remains to be seen. If there will be a sequel at all.
