Wolff on engine regulations 2026: 'Trying to find a compromise'

Positive talks took place yesterday regarding the new engine rules in 2026. No further information has been given as to what exactly was discussed, but Motorsport-Total.com writes that Toto Wolff has already come up with a new proposal.
The new engine regulations were scheduled for 2025 but will be delayed until 2026. "Maybe we can find a compromise and bring forward the green fuel by one or two years - and in return maybe extend the general regulations by one year. Then maybe everyone will be helped," says the Mercedes team boss.
According to Wolff, Formula 1 needs to set an example when it comes to environmental issues. "If I start discussing all the points now, we will still be sitting here in half an hour. The important thing is that we all agree on what we want in 2025."
Current engine must leave F1
Formula 1 wants the Volkswagen group to join in. They not only want sustainable fuel, but also the withdrawal of the current V6 hybrid engine. What the power unit will look like in the future is not yet known. Further details will be announced later. Wolff outlines the following:
"A power source that makes us proud, also in the context of electrification. At the same time, we can do that in a cost framework that is better than today." Moreover, biofuels or e-fuels are 'a very essential component' according to Wolff.
On the radical changes VW wants to make to the internal combustion engine, he says the following: "We don't need to reinvent the wheel there. And then you optimise the electric part, with sustainable fuels. That's the direction it's going."
