Sainz: 'We are slow in qualifying but fast in the race'
- Cameron Smith
After qualifying in P11, which was pushed to 10th on the grid thanks to Sebastian Vettel's three place penalty, Carlos Sainz showed exactly what he's made of by finishing in an impressive fifth place. That place was aided by way of Sergio Perez suffering two separate five second time penalty, but the Spaniard was on the pace all race long.
Speaking to SkySports after the race, Sainz revealed that: "It was a difficult lap one. I felt the difference between the hard and the soft, I was like 'I am going nowhere'. I was P14 after lap one. It was a bit of a risky move starting the race on the hard tyre.
"But I remained patient and then its about taking this tyre as long as possible and coming back at the end."
McLaren still ahead in the Constructors' Championship
Despite Sainz's impressive performance, Lando Norris secured yet another podium in the race, and helped in McLaren's battle with Ferrari for P3 in the Constructors' Championship. Speaking about the pace of the McLaren, Sainz revealed that it's [the McLaren] "not an easy car to overtake. It's quick on acceleration. I managed to risk it a lot at turn three and made it stick on turn four which set it up to catch Perez."
Ferrari have been yo-yoing all season, with Sainz expressing this by saying: "We have been in the fight for pole position, but we are slow in qualifying and fast in the race, and in Paul Ricard we were fast in quali and slow in the race."
"We need to keep maximizing our results" was his final thought.
