Marko sees Mercedes making no mistake with Russell: 'Would be a misstep'
- GPblog.com
The discussion about the seat next to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for 2022 is still in full swing. It seems to be a repeat of last year's debate. And even now it is still quite unclear who will sit next to Hamilton in the Mercedes next year.
Lewis Hamilton has already said that Valtteri Bottas is 'the best teammate he has ever driven with', meaning the debate over Bottas or George Russell is not over for now.
When Mercedes will finally announce it remains to be seen, but Helmut Marko would understand if the choice falls on Russell. This he says in an interview with Formel1.de. "Russell is definitely worth considering with the performance he is showing now at Williams."
Russel to Red Bull?
For what if Mercedes let the young Brit go, against all odds, and doesn't drive at Williams or Mercedes next year? Would Red Bull strike then? "That is so utopian," says Marko. "If Mercedes let him go, it would be such a misstep that I honestly can't imagine it. And if I'm well informed, it's also irrelevant."
So the Austrian thinks he is fairly certain that Russell will move to Mercedes next year, which means Bottas may go the opposite way. The coming period will tell.
