For the first time Formula 1 is experimenting with sprint races. During the British Grand Prix weekend, a 100-kilometre race will be run on Saturday afternoon. This will determine the starting grid for Sunday's GP. In the sprint race, Lewis Hamilton will start from P1 after his victory in qualifying.

Prior to the sprint race, there is also a second free practice. The parc fermé is already partially entered, but the teams still get the chance to fine-tune the last things ahead of the sprint race and 'normal' race. Adjustments to the front wing for example can still be done.

FP2 will start at 12:00hrs UK time and will last one hour, just like every other free practice in 2021. At 16:30 it's time for the race over 100 kilometres. The winner will probably be known after about thirty minutes.

World Championship points in the sprint race

Winning the sprint race will not only earn you pole position for the next day. There are also World Championship points to be earned. The winner receives three points in the battle for the world championship. The numbers two and three of Saturday receive two and one points respectively.
