Fernando Alonso ensured that all attention was on him during the sprint race by making a super start and immediately moving up from eleventh to fifth position. After that the Alpine driver had to defend for laps and he did so tooth and nail.

Although it ensured that the fans were treated to a fine first sprint race of Formula 1, the stewards and opponents of Alonso were less happy with the way he defended. The Spaniard swerved from side to side on the straights and even appeared to change line on the brakes. He received a warning for this, but no penalty.

Alonso has said after the weekend, according to Motorsport.com himself that he will not change his way of racing. "I've been always clean driver, and I will remain a clean driver for all my career. I think I'm [one of the] few ones that I don't have any points on the license." Alonso felt himself an "idiot" in Austria by respecting the rules he says. According to him, other drivers are increasingly doing things that are not in the rules, so that is why he will start doing it himself more often.

"We wanted to be honest," said Alonso. He and the team have made it clear to race control that some drivers are not staying within the rules. "But if the referee is doing nothing, we understand that we can play also with the hands in the penalty area. So we do that."
