Mercedes' driver selection for 2022 appears to be some time away, but team boss Toto Wolff seems to be secretly hinting at the arrival of George Russell.

"Valtteri seems to have bad luck glued to his wheel. He could have performed much better. He might not have won as many races as Lewis, but on Saturday you can see that he's right there, if not faster," Wolff explained to Sky Sports F1.

The difficult choice for Wolff

Wolff thinks it's important what happens to the driver who doesn't get to drive for Mercedes. Williams team boss Jost Capito has already been very clear that if Russell doesn't end up at Mercedes, he is welcome to spend another year at Williams. Bottas, on the other hand, does not have a 100% sure second option.

"You want to do it sooner rather than later because both drivers who are in the race for this cockpit need to know. Whatever step we take, we need to know what happens to George or Valtteri. We don't make a decision if we don't know what the direction is for the other," the Austrian concluded.
