In qualifying, Red Bull Racing seemed to be a lot quicker than Mercedes in the first sector. According to Lewis Hamilton, this was mainly due to the Hugenholtz, the banking in turn three where the drivers are almost ejected towards the Scheivak.

"It's mainly about the exit of turn two, they are a lot faster there and also in turn three they are much faster," Hamilton acknowledged to Autosport. "Generally we are just a bit slower there, I was even slower on my fastest lap. I was told it was almost two tenths in that area."

Wolff also sees ambiguity

"It's hard to say exactly what it is, but there is definitely some. It seems that this part of the circuit just doesn't quite suit our car". Team boss Toto Wolff is also unsure why the Mercedes is losing so much time to Max Verstappen's Red Bull on that particular stretch of circuit.

"It's strange because we are very fast on the rest of the circuit. Our car just doesn't seem to like it with the heavy banking at low speed. We haven't found an answer to it yet," Wolff concludes.
