Alonso best Spanish athlete of 2019
At the Spanish Asturias Sports Gala, 40-year-old Alonso won the award of best athlete of 2019. Alonso was rewarded for his success in the WEC championship. The ceremony could not take place in 2020 due to corona.
At the event, the Alpine driver spoke to the press about his award and answered questions about his return to Formula One. Marca quotes Alonso: "I am very happy with my return to F1 after being away for a year."
Alonso at his peak in 2022
Due to the postponement of the rule changes in F1 from 2021 to 2022, Alonso saw a great opportunity to join the French team. As such, he sees the first year as one to get into and expects a lot more from 2022.
"Personally, I wasn't quite comfortable in the first races and adapted in the fourth or fifth race. The goal was to use a year to get to the top in 2022. I think I will reach my top then."
