Giovinazzi takes aim at Alfa Romeo: 'It's impossible today'
- GPblog.com
Antonio Giovinazzi doesn't have a good word to say about Alfa Romeo after the Mexican Grand Prix. The Italian feels that his team has deliberately disadvantaged him after a strategic choice turned out completely wrong for Giovinazzi.
Giovinazzi started the race strongly. The Italian got away well from his eleventh starting spot and was even driving in sixth place at one point. When the Italian was overtaken by Sebastian Vettel his team decided to bring him in on lap 16. This turned out to be a mistake for Giovinazzi.
Giovinazzi hits hard
The Italian found himself stuck behind Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas, who were both on their hard tyres after their incident on lap one. Giovinazzi lost all his advantage and as a result, eventually finished in eleventh place. ''Okay guys, thanks for the great strategy'', Giovinazzi was quite cynical over the team radio.
After the race, Giovinazzi still hadn't cooled down and shared his anger with Sky Italia. ''I'm disappointed and angry. The team brought me in, but I came in behind Ricciardo and Bottas. I had to warm up my tyres, but the pace was slower than I was driving on the mediums. So I lost all my advantage with that 'undercut'. When the others came in they were much faster. The strategy was all wrong.''
Criticism of Alfa Romeo
Giovinazzi even accuses his team of thinking it could be a deliberate move. ''Until today I didn't think the team would hurt me, but today I'm disappointed.'' He also let slip on Twitter: ''Sometimes it's easy to look at the positive side. Sometimes that's hard. Today that's impossible.''
This is not the first time Giovinazzi has been openly critical of his team. Ever since Valtteri Bottas was announced as Alfa Romeo's new driver and talks with Giovinazzi about the final seat for 2022 have still not taken place, he has feared losing his place in F1 and has been particularly critical in doing so.
Sono il classico ragazzo che cerca sempre il lato positivo delle cose. Oggi è impossibile.
