Max Verstappen managed to hold on to the lead at the start of the Austrian Grand Prix, but Charles Leclerc soon closed in on the Dutchman in his apparently faster Ferrari. On the twelfth lap of the race, the Monegasque managed to pass his rival.

Verstappen later regained the lead with Red Bull Racing performing an undercut, but Leclerc was closing in again after his own pit stop. On lap thirty-four, the Ferrari driver managed to overtake his rival for the second time.

What Verstappen can do to regain the lead will become clear later in the race. Leclerc is rapidly closing in on the Dutchman and Carlos Sainz is also closing in, but Red Bull Racing may have a trump card up its sleeve in the form of a clever strategy. Meanwhile, Verstappen has come in for a second pit stop, giving away his second place to Sainz for the time being but potentially attacking towards the end of the race.
