Do these statistics mean qualifying will no longer be exciting in Turkey?
- GPblog.com
From the Turkish Grand Prix onwards, we will once again see a new statistic from Amazon. In Formula 1, it is often a matter of waiting until qualifying to know the real pace of the drivers and teams, but all that has to change now.
In 2020, the rise of AWS in Formula 1 is becoming increasingly apparent. During the race we will see how long the tires can last, how fast two drivers will compete with each other and what the gap is for a pit stop. This is interesting data, although sometimes you may wonder if it is completely correct.
Qualification no longer exciting
In Turkey, we are getting a new statistic from AWS, which will show which driver is the fastest in qualifying. However, qualifying will not yet have taken place. Based on all the data from the practice sessions, AWS will be able to make a prediction which driver is the fastest and what the differences will be with the other drivers.
The video explains how this works. AWS collects all available data to come to these predictions. This includes live timing, but also grip levels, historical statistics and the condition of the tire that was driven on. During the Grand Prix of Turkey, we will see this for the first time.
