Russell was allowed to drive the second Grand Prix in the Middle East for Mercedes in Bahrain. Lewis Hamilton tested positive for coronavirus and instead of reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, Russell was put forward. The Brit is a Williams driver, but is also still part of the Mercedes training programme.
Russell puts on a show
As a debutant at Mercedes, Russell already made a great impression on Friday and Saturday. On Friday he was the fastest and on Saturday he was only 0.026s down on Bottas, who has been in the car all season.
After Russell drove away from Bottas at the start of the race and took the lead firmly in his hands, it was made very difficult for Russell when his tyres were changed during the pit stop. After another pit stop he came out behind Bottas, but with a phenomenal move Russell caught up with him again.
