Hamilton and Verstappen could have split world cup according to Alonso

It is well known that Fernando Alonso had a preference for Max Verstappen as the eventual world champion of 2021. However, because of the way things went down, the Spaniard also feels sorry for Lewis Hamilton.
Alonso burst out laughing when he was initially told over the board radio that as a lapped driver he was not allowed to pass the safety car. The laugh said it all. The two-time world champion had often spoken out about non-English drivers being disadvantaged and was therefore also up in arms about Verstappen.
Alonso cheers for Verstappen
''I think he’s a champion, it was a matter of time that he won the trophy. On Sunday he was lucky. It’s going to be a big topic I guess, but if you take the 22 races, as I said on Thursday, any of the two could be world champion. I think more than any other year if you could split the trophy in two, this was the year to do it. Because both of them were outstanding,'' Alonso said according to The Race.
Alonso understands that Hamilton will feel very bad. ''When you lose the championship because of the safety car in the last moment, for sure you feel a little bit sorry.'' However, the Spaniard argues, as he did prior to the weekend, that he felt Verstappen was just a little more the deserved world champion because he had a little more bad luck than Lewis this year.
