Lawson warned: 'If he tries that with Verstappen, good luck!'
- Ludo van Denderen
Liam Lawson faces the tough task of being Max Verstappen's teammate in 2025. Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo, Alexander Albon and most recently Sergio Perez all eventually lost out to the now four-time Formula 1 world champion. Guenther Steiner, former Haas F1 team boss, fears for the New Zealander that the same fate awaits him.
Formula 1 drivers all share a common trait: they all think they can become world champions. For most, however, it remains just a thought or dream. However, it is easy to imagine that Liam Lawson also thinks he can eventually be the best in the world, especially now that he gets to race in one of the best cars in the field. But Guenther Steiner advises Lawson in advance not to be under too many illusions.
'Lawson can't beat Verstappen'
"Because if Liam tries to beat Max, good luck with that one!", says the Italian during an exclusive interview with GPblog. "Nobody achieved it, so if Liam is smart, he just sees himself as number two and tries to learn a year as good as he can get and try to get as close to Max as possible."
"But live with that and go into that one with a clear vision of it. That's his only opportunity. Otherwise, if you try what the other ones tried. To beat Max, good luck with that one. It's not gonna happen. It's not gonna happen. You need to be realistic about what you can and cannot do. The guy (Lawson) is just good and puts a lot of effort in as well," Steiner concluded.
