Liam Lawson, born on February 11, 2002 in Hastings, is a New Zealand Formula 1 driver who races for Racing Bulls in 2026 after a brief spell at Red Bull Racing.

Liam Lawson has been part of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2019. He competed in Formula 3 and Formula 2, finishing third in the F2 championship in 2022 with four wins and six podiums.

He gained his first experience in a Formula 1 car in 2021 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, driving the Red Bull RB7. That same year, he took part in the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi for AlphaTauri. In 2022, he became reserve driver for both AlphaTauri and Red Bull Racing, and appeared in free practice sessions in Belgium, Mexico and Abu Dhabi.

After Nyck de Vries was dropped midway through 2023, Lawson initially missed out on a race seat as AlphaTauri chose Daniel Ricciardo. However, Lawson still got his opportunity later that season.

He replaced Ricciardo at the Dutch Grand Prix after the Australian broke his hand in FP2. With little preparation, Lawson qualified P20 but finished P13 in the race, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda. He went on to compete in five Grands Prix that year and made a strong impression.

Despite that, Red Bull opted to retain Ricciardo and Sergio Perez for 2024, leaving Lawson without a race seat.

At the end of 2024, Red Bull promoted Lawson to the main team to replace Sergio Perez. The move did not last long. After two races, he was demoted back to Racing Bulls, with Yuki Tsunoda taking his place.

Back at Racing Bulls, Lawson had a mixed season. He was often outperformed by rookie teammate Isack Hadjar. His best result was fifth place in Azerbaijan. His future remained uncertain for most of the year, until Red Bull confirmed before Abu Dhabi that he would stay with the team in 2026.

Lawson continues with Racing Bulls in 2026, now alongside Arvid Lindblad. The season is crucial for his future within the Red Bull structure.

During the Mexican Grand Prix in 2025, Lawson narrowly avoided a collision with marshals crossing the track while he was alone on circuit. He described the situation as life-threatening, after which the FIA launched an investigation.
