In an interview with Toto Wolff that Mercedes has shared on their Youtube channel. In this interview, the team boss once again hits out at race director Michael Masi. He also states that Max Verstappen is a worthy champion.
Emotions were running high with Toto Wolff at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and, looking at the interview, the Austrian still seems to be boiling with anger. He weighs up his answers carefully, but when asked if he has had a conversation with Masi yet, some frustration surfaces.
Wolff doesn't need to talk to Masi
''I am not interested in a conversation with Michael Masi. The decisions he made in the last four minutes of this race has dropped Lewis Hamilton of his deserved world championship.''
Wolff blames the race director for preventing Hamilton from chalking up his eighth world title. ''His way of racing in the last four races was faultless. He had a commanding lead in Abu Dhabi from the start and never gave that lead away again. Robbing him on the last lap of the race is unacceptable.''
Damage to Formula 1
While Wolff's anger is evident, he also makes it clear that Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen have done nothing wrong in his eyes. Verstappen can't help it that he is now world champion and not Lewis.
''This situation is nothing to do with Max. He is a worthy champion and his driving is exceptional. Red Bull are a fierce competitor and I have the greatest respect for everyone who works there. I would have loved to sit here and avoid it, all the discussions and the damage that has been done to the sport by the decisions that have been made on Sunday,'' the Mercedes team boss concludes.
