As Jos Verstappen said earlier: When Max Verstappen is behind you, you know there will be an overtaking attempt. The father of the new world champion didn't expect the action at the point where it was executed and feared for a moment that Lewis Hamilton could take back the leading position on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Verstappen Senior saw the winning overtaking manoeuvre come sooner than he expected. "We were thinking where he was going to do it and he did it in turn five. I didn't expect that, because after that there are two long straights," he said in conversation with David Coulthard on behalf of CarNext.
Verstappen did not see overtake coming
On the long straights Jos feared that Hamilton could take back the position. "Then Lewis came alongside him going into the new fast corner," he says. "It was crazy exciting, I had tears in my eyes."
For Verstappen, the whole season was an emotional rollercoaster. "Then it went really well and then there was bad luck. Everything that happened made it even more intense and made us want to win the race and the championship even more", concluded Jos Verstappen.
