Eight years ago today: Schumacher's devastating skiing accident
- GPblog.com
Today it is eight years since Michael Schumacher was involved in a serious skiing accident. The respect for Schumacher and his achievements has never disappeared and sympathy is still noticable today.
On 29 December 2013, things went wrong for the then 44-year-old former racing driver. He hit his head on a stone during a fall and sustained severe brain damage as a result. What exactly happened that day and how he is doing now has been unknown ever since. The Schumacher family wants to keep his recovery private and we respect that.
Although the German did cause some controversy when he drove in Formula 1, he was a legend on and off the track. He started his career with a test at Jordan and eventually signed a contract at Benetton for the rest of 1991 where he became world champion in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, he moved to Ferrari where he won five more world titles from 2000 to 2004 breaking several records. Lewis Hamilton has already broken many of those records, but the former world champion will always remain one of the best drivers of all time.
Mick Schumacher
One reason why the interest in the Schumacher family is there to this day is because of his son Mick, who is now a regular driver on the Formula 1 grid. The long-awaited debut of the 22-year-old driver came at the start of 2021, and it's a treat for many people and certainly for Schumacher fans.
