Verstappens RB18 is again a 'masterpiece of brilliant Newey'
- GPblog.com
The 63-year-old Adrian Newey has a long and impressive career to his name in Formula 1. The designer of Red Bull Racing has won the constructors' championship ten times with three different teams and the drivers' championship with seven different drivers. According to Robert Doornbos, he is also far from being outdone.
RB18 another masterpiece from Newey
The last constructors' title with a Newey-designed car dates back to 2013 with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber for Red Bull Racing. The last drivers' title was won last season thanks to Max Verstappen. In recent years, the British designer seemed to be mainly involved in projects outside Formula 1, but the focus seems to be back on the premier class of motor racing, Doornbos concludes on Motorsport.com.
Doornbos thinks that this renewed focus is largely due to Verstappen. The Dutchman is said to have brought new energy to the designer, who has regained the taste for it. Doornbos says he is also impressed by the RB18, the new car of Verstappen and Sergio Perez and even calls it a masterpiece of the brilliant Newey.
Doornbos hopes Ferrari and McLaren will close the gap
With the new regulations introduced this season, Formula 1 is hoping to get the field closer together and see more teams competing for wins or even the title. Doornbos has a good feeling about it and thinks that especially Ferrari will make a big step. The Italian team has been dry for two years now, so Ferrari is actually obliged to do that, according to Doornbos.
Also McLaren, according to Doornbos, can compete for the prizes this season. At the Italian Grand Prix last season, Daniel Ricciardo gave the team its first victory since 2012 and Doornbos thinks that we will see McLaren competing for wins and podiums more often. According to the Ziggo Sports analyst, that would also only be good for Formula 1 if not only Mercedes and Red Bull Racing, but also Ferrari and McLaren can fight for podiums.
