Domenicali gives vote of confidence: 'He will certainly do great results'
Former Ferrari boss and current F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has given Carlos Sainz some advice after a disastrous home race at Imola. In the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Sainz had to climb out of his car after just a couple of corners as he had an incident with Daniel Ricciardo.
After signing a new Ferrari contract in the build-up to the team's home race, Sainz looked to score crucial points in their battle with Red Bull Racing. On a wet slippery track, Ricciardo touched Sainz who ended up beached in the gravel. For the second race running, Sainz recorded a DNF and now sits below George Russell in the World Championship standings.
Advice
In front of the Tifosi, it couldn't have happened at a worse time for Sainz. There is high pressure being a Ferrari driver, especially when taking part in a title fight. Many pundits in F1 highlighted how a mistake in qualifying was the first sign of him cracking under the pressure. Sainz recovered from this during the sprint qualifying race. Domenicali explains his thoughts on the incident.
"Carlos Sainz is a very talented driver, unfortunately with a slippery track Ricciardo touched him. These, however, are episodes that if you don't know how to manage them well you get into psychological difficulties that you don't have to face," the F1 CEO is quoted by Sky Sports Italia.
Domenicali has been there and done it all for Ferrari. In 2008, the Italian took over from Jean Todt and won the Constructors Championship in his first year as Ferrari boss. That was the final title that would come his way, but he and Fernando Alonso ensured the team would stay in subsequent title fights until he resigned in 2014. As a former boss, Domenicali gave advice to Sainz.
"He renewed for another two years with his team, so the guarantees are there, he just has to be calm and he will certainly record excellent results," he added.
