The accident continues to haunt Carlos Sainz for the time being because even during a Pirelli tire test, it was the Spaniard who was standing along the track in Imola with a smoking engine.

Test in Imola

On Tuesday and Wednesday after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Pirelli held a test of the new tires for 2023. They were the first two of the total eighteen days that Pirelli will test this year. The eighteen days will be divided fairly among all nine teams participating. Haas decided not to participate in the testing program.

At Imola, AlphaTauri and Alfa Romeo were in action for two days and Alpine and Ferrari alternated. Alpine drove on Tuesday and Ferrari on Wednesday. Ferrari and AlphaTauri both used the regular drivers, Esteban Ocon came into action for Alpine, where Robert Kubica and Guanyu Zhou made the meters for Alfa Romeo.

Bad luck for Sainz

After an unfortunate retirement in Imola, the bad luck for Sainz didn't stop there, as during his part of the day at the track, the F1-75 stalled. Smoke came out of the rear of the car and the Ferrari had to be taken off the track. The test was organized behind closed doors and Pirelli makes no further statements about the times that were set. However, the number of laps was made public. Sainz did manage 51 laps on Wednesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, many laps were driven. Ocon came to 122 on behalf of Alpine, Pierre Gasly came to 121 for AlphaTauri and Zhou drove 120. On Wednesday, Alfa Romeo came to 100 laps for Kubica, Yuki Tsunoda drove 103 laps on Imola and Sainz and Leclerc came to 114 laps together, despite Sainz's stalling.
