'Alpine wants to make choice between Alonso and Piastri around British GP'
- GPblog.com
Fernando Alonso, at forty years old, is an old hand in Formula 1, but the Spaniard has indicated that he does not want to quit for the time being. Alpine has a choice between Alonso and Oscar Piastri for 2023. During the British GP more may become known about that.
Piastri or Alonso at Alpine?
Esteban Ocon is contracted to Alpine F1 until 2024, but the contract of the two-time world champion expires at the end of this year. Motorsport.com reports that Alonso has the best papers to capture the seat for the next few years. Piastri, meanwhile, is a reserve driver at the team and also seems to have enough talent to get a permanent spot in F1.
Talking to the news medium, team boss Otmar Szafnauer says that he has not yet thought carefully about the choice, but that around the British Grand Prix there will be talks about the future of Alonso and Piastri. If Alonso extends his term at Alpine, the chances for Piastri are not completely gone by the way. Alpine is open to loaning out their own junior to another team.
De Vries takes a peek at Williams
That a loan move will come this season does not seem out of the question. Rumors say that Nicholas Latifi's seat at Williams is under pressure. There would be a driver change on the way. The names of Piastri and Nyck de Vries are being mentioned. Szafnauer manages to refute the rumors as far as he has not heard anything from Williams about interest in Piastri. At McLaren it is different, they have already asked in time if they could have the F2 driver as a reserve. A switch for De Vries seems more and more likely. The Dutchman will drive FP1 for Williams this weekend in Spain.
